[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Styx[/lastfm] has a song called “Show Me the Way”, written by vocalist and keyboardist (and devout Catholic) Dennis DeYoung for his son, arguing for keeping the faith in the oft-tumultuous world. The lesser-known Goth-metal band [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Elis[/lastfm] also has a song of that title. But today we’re visiting the mid-’70s for the song by one of that era’s big names, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Peter Frampton[/lastfm].

Frampton wrote “Show Me the Way” in 1975, and it debuted on his album Frampton that year, and as a single. It wasn’t until 1976, however, that the song hit the charts in a live version from the album Frampton Comes Alive! That version climbed all the way to #6, and became his biggest hit at that time.

Not just “Show Me the Way”, but the entirety of Frampton Comes Alive! was a success for the artist. The title was true in more ways than one, as it proved to be the breakthrough album he needed in the United States. Prior to that time, the English musician had released four solo albums in the U.S. to little success.

One other thing that “Show Me the Way” did for Frampton’s career was to associate him forevermore with the use of ‘talk box’ effects for his guitar playing. While Frampton used the device on several occasions on Frampton Comes Alive!, it was “Show Me the Way” more than any other that would tie his image to it.
