With their first annual Orion Festival firmly in their rear view mirror, and their co-headlining date at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival coming up in less than two weeks, Metallica are starting to set their sights on their next project: a 3D movie.

Guitarist Kirk Hammett tells CBS Local that the band members are only going to appear in concert segments: the film’s narrative will take place separately and will not feature the members of the band. In other words, it’s not going to be like the fantasy sequences of Led Zeppelin’s The Song Remains The Same; in that film, the band members were shown as knights rescuing maidens, seeking characters from Tarot card decks and riding horses or racing cars.

Of course, fans are also curious about when the band will start working on their next album, as it’s been nearly four years since the release of their last album, 2008′s Death Magnetic, which was produced by Rick Rubin. Hammett tells CBS Local that they’ll start working on the next album in the fall, but they aren’t sure who is going to produce it yet.

It’s going to be a busy few months for Hammett. He’s also going to be promoting his book about his huge collection of horror-film memorabilia, Too Much Horror Business, which is due out October 1.
