5 Music Movies You Don’t Want To Miss At The Cleveland International Film Festival

The 39th installment of the Cleveland International Film Festival returns to Tower City Cinemas March 18-29. Whether this is your 39th trip to the film fest or your first ever there’s always something new to discover.

Beatles

This film out of Norway is based on the best-selling novel ‘BEATLES,’ a coming-of-age film based on four mop top teens living in Oslo during the 60s. The film follows a group of friends as they try to emulate the Beatles with their own band. You will actually hear Beatles music in the film, thanks to Ringo and Paul’s blessing, which was a huge coup for those behind the film. Although the trailer below does not have subtitles, the film will.

Heaven Adores You

This documentary filmed by a director based in Chicago, Illinois follows the story of Elliott Smith a singer-songwriter who saw huge success in the 90s before a mysterious suicide in 2003. The documentary is less a look at Smith’s death than it is a look at his career and the trajectory of his musical path in the 90s.

Take Me To The River

Actor Terrance Howard narrates a trip to Memphis, Tennessee to the legendary Stax Records in the 1960s for a look at the history of American soul music. Along with highlighting the soul movement the film takes you behind the scenes at recording sessions with William Bell, Mavis Staples, Snoop Dogg, and Yo Gotti.

Long Way To The Top

Lakewood, Ohio’s own Rob Montague is behind this documentary that shows the real story, struggles and triumphs of life as a rock n’ roll star. The film trails three different bands along with interviews from artists from groups you’ll recognize like Def Leppard, Weezer, Limp Bizkit, and Nine Inch Nails.

Danny Collins

Starring Al Pacino, Annette Bening, Bobby Cannavale, Jennifer Garner, Christopher Plummer this film will be closing the Film Festival on its final night. The film follows Pacino as rock star Danny Collins whose life changes after receiving a long lost letter from John Lennon. The letter changes his life and he cancels his tour, moves, and decides to re-discover his love of music.
