In just three weeks, Straight Outta Compton has become the highest grossing music biopic in history, with $134.1 million ticket receipts in the U.S. and Canada.
Straight Outta Compton overtook Walk The Line, a biopic about Johnny and June Carter Cash, which had peaked at $119 million.
The film showcases the rise of N.W.A, the gangsta rap supergroup of the 1980s that included Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, Eazy-E and DJ Yella (Arabian Prince was also associated with the group early on).
While the film continues to break barriers, it had its share of critics who questioned the filmmakers choice to leave out references to Dr. Dre’s abuse of a female video show host, Dee Barnes.
