The Daily Cut: Paul McCartney “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey”

Paul McCartney: “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey”

ALBUM: Ram

YEAR: 1971

WRITER: Paul McCartney

Number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 for one week.

Paul McCartney recorded Ram in New York with Linda on backing vocals, session drummer Denny Seiwell and two session guitarists. Seiwell recalls cutting his part for “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” — but not getting to hear the completed song until quite a while later. “Just great fun recording it. And when I got to hear it – I wasn’t there, I was working all day long on this other project when they did the sweetening date, but my friend Marvin Stamm played that [sings fluegelhorn part] and I didn’t get to hear that until the album was done and they sent me a box of records, you know. And I was just knocked out by the finished product.”

“Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” was released 45 years ago today (August 2nd, 1971), 10 years to the day after The Beatles began their stint as regular headliners at the Cavern Club in Liverpool.
