World War II has been portrayed on countless films over the years. Some glamorize war with patriotic and thrilling speeches (The Longest Day), while some show it’s grittiness and tragedy (Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers). Director Christoper Nolan (Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Interstellar) is set to take us deep into one of the most harrowing moments for the British army early in the war.
The official announcement trailer for Dunkirk, Starring Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Mark Rylance, was released on Thursday and it shows just enough to make it’s summer 2017 release seem like an eternity away. In the trailer we see British troops huddled on a pier as an unseen aircraft is heard approaching. Is it a German plane coming to attack?
It will be interesting to see how Nolan depicts the events of May and June, 1940, a time when British, French and Belgian troops were surrounded by Germans in Dunkirk, France, yet were able to escape annihilation. If his previous action-packed films are any indication, Dunkirk will certainly not be a boring history lesson.
