The Daily Cut: Dire Straits “Down to the Waterline”

Dire Straits: “Down to the Waterline”

ALBUM: Dire Straits

YEAR: 1978

WRITER: Mark Knopfler

Did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

The first song on the first Dire Straits album, “Down to the Waterline” has taken its place among the band’s classics, despite never having been a hit single. Frontman Mark Knopfler tells what inspired him to write it. That was my going with my first real major girlfriend in Newcastle, going down by the river because we were always trying to find places we could go and be together. We ended up going down by the river, really, a lot, because it was real quiet down there at night time. That’s definitely about me and her.”

Happy 67th birthday to solo artist and Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler .
