Journey: “Who’s Crying Now”
WRITERS: Jonathan Cain and Steve Perry
Peaked at number-four on both the Billboard‘s Hot 100 and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts.
“Who’s Crying Now” was the first single released off Journey’s 1981 Escape album and one of four to chart in the Top 20. Keyboardist Jonathan Cain recalls co-writing it with singer Steve Perry. “’Who’s Crying Now’ was a melody that Steve Perry had in his head. He came over to where I was living in the city and it was pouring rain outside, and it was just one of those things that flowed out. And I said, ‘What about “Who’s Crying Now” and he sang it.’ And we wrote it and three hours later it was done – sort of an explosion.”
Thirty-five years ago today, Journey topped the Billboard album chart for the first and only time, with Escape.
