Josh McCown Has Broken Collarbone, Possible Return Remains Week To Week

Josh McCown’s toughness is unquestioned and on Friday we found out just how tough he really was last Sunday.

McCown sustained a broken left clavicle during the 25-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens a team spokesman clarified Friday afternoon.

Head coach Hue Jackson misspoke during his presser Friday by saying there was a “displacement” but it is a non-displaced fracture according to the spokesman. Jackson and the team had been evasive and non-specific all week concerning the severity of McCown’s injury before finally clarifying it.

“I think it is more of a deep sprain at this time than anything, but I don’t think there is anything totally broken,” Jackson said on Monday.

The specifics of McCown’s injury came into question when defensive coordinator Ray Horton revealed that McCown broke his collarbone when he was asked what disappointed him most about the loss to the Ravens during his press conference Friday morning.

“I was probably most disappointed for Josh,” Horton said. “He went out there and played with a broken collarbone [and] until the last throw had a chance to win and we talked about the heritage [of] Ronnie Lott getting a finger amputated to play the game and how precious this game is and what guys will do to play in this game. And so, for me, it was disappointing that we didn’t win it for Josh.”

Jackson said that Horton spoke out of line and that it “is not his job to talk about our offensive players…He doesn’t get the [injury/medical] report.”

The Browns say that the week to week evaluation concerning McCown’s return remains unchanged.

McCown, who missed the final 5 games of the 2015 season with a broken right collarbone, completed 20 of 33 passes for 260 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in the loss.
