The Daily Cut: John Mellencamp “Pink Houses”

John Mellencamp: “Pink Houses”

ALBUM: Uh-Huh

YEAR: 1983

WRITER: John Mellencamp

Peaked at number-eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and number-three on the Top Tracks mainstream rock chart.

John Mellencamp tells us that “Pink Houses” is one of those rare songs that just came tumbling out of him — or maybe more to the point, into him. “That song was channeled to me – and the first two verses. When stuff is being channeled to you, you can’t write it down quick enough. Your brain is going, ‘Bom bom bom,’ y’know, ‘There’s a black man with a black cat…’ and you start writing it. And you know I didn’t even use the guitar to write the melody. The melody just came with the words. So it was like delivered to me. Here, John.”

John Mellencamp celebrates his 65th birthday today.
