The Daily Cut: The Jimi Hendrix Experience “Stone Free”

The Jimi Hendrix Experience: “Stone Free”

ALBUM: Smash Hits

YEAR: 1966

WRITER: Jimi Hendrix

The B-Side of the Experience’s first British single, it was released as an A-side in the U.S. almost three years later and failed to dent the Billboard Hot 100 — although it made the Bubbling Under chart at number-130.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience played its first official show at the Novelty in Évreux, France 50 years ago today. It took place about three weeks before it recorded its debut single — “Hey Joe,” backed with “Stone Free.” In an ’80s interview, late drummer Mitch Mitchell explained that you wouldn’t have heard “Stone Free” at that first show, since it wasn’t conceived until they hit the recording studio that first time. “We never played it, really, up until that time. I think we were in the studio, Jimi basicially went through the song and it was like, ‘OK…ah…see what we can come up with for that one.’ Our relationship was always, like, complete freedom. ‘Any ideas? This is the basic riff, take it from there.’ It was done pretty damn quickly.”
